I'm not the only one thinking this / techno

Postby wheeter on 25 May 2006, 11:29

Last year's festival was fuggin' awesome, but me and all my mates were agreed that the one thing missing was a decent dedicated techno tent. What is everyone else's thoughts on this? To be honest, I find breaks incredibly monotonous and cheesy, and so does everyone else I know, but if there's room for a dedicated breaks tent then surely a techno one could be possible too? I spent all my time last year going in between the Littlebig tent and the main tent, and the one thing I missed dearly was some awesome techno (though Carl Craig was absolutely immense). I know there's the whole harder techno thing going down with Speedy J and whatnot, but I think a tent with DJs playing shitloads of detroit/beatdown, basic channel, and kompakt and berlin-style stuff would be totally mega... you could get Matthew Dear/Audion, Andy Stott, Mathew Jonson, Ellen Allien, Claro Intelecto, Sleeparchive, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig again, Modeselektor, Markus Guentner, Dettinger, Alex Smoke, DJ Koze etc etc... all these artists would suit the festival really well and would bring on a pretty righteous party if you ask me. I'm sure most peeps would be more than willing to sacrifice one of the (let's be honest, pretty lame) chill-out tents for this... thoughts?

there are only going to be 3 techno legends, despite last year's cries for a techno tent. that is from the horse's mouth.

Hmmm OK so 3 techno legends but could that mean there might be some more newer techno artists (that don't qualify as "legends" just yet)? If not, that's fucking weak... we can only hope.

yeah, that is what i was hoping. 2 of the 3 techno legends are going to be kenny larkin and kevin saunderson (it is in their myspace), i have no idea of the third one.. and i am quietly hoping that they could throw some m-nus stuff or great new dj's like nathan fake, alex smoke, matthew johnson into the fray.

Really, Kenny larkin and kevin saunderson? I guess that's ok, but when you said "legends" I was hoping more for say, Juan Atkins etc... then again i'm not organising it eh? Mathew Jonson would be so sweet at Glade, i've seen him a couple of times and both times were just incredible.

well i'd say that both of those can be safely considered as legends in the detroit techno scheme of things, especially saunderson. it would be very very sweet if atkins played.. i am also secretly hoping for a minus showcase, but it is not going to happen on saturday as they are all going to be playing at the monegros fetival in spain

Saunderson will be great yer right... i'm just worried that that's gonna be all there is now though. Fingers crossed. Also, unrelated, but I hope The Bug & Warrior Queen return to the Littlebig tent this year too, as they were totally, savagely awesome.

I think everyone would define Larkin and Saunderson as legends in the techno genre. However, it does appear the original suggestion is alittle narrow-minded, after all the techno family covers a whole host of widely different music types under its banner and some people might think that to have a whole tent playing 'purist' or 'detroit' techno would be terrible dull and prosaic - philistines like me for example.

A tent that mixed it up with other aspects of techno such as acid-techno, schranz, hardstyle, tech house, hardstyle et al would suit me much better. Fuck it, throw in some hard house, hard trance and hardcore while we're at it, lets be eclectic.

I've got my fingers crossed for Surgeon or something along those lines.

Surgeon would be ace yeah... that breezeblock session he did last year was intense.

Root, you're right, a "techno tent" could incorporate more styles than just the ones i listed, some acid would be awesome, but i think there's enough hard trance etc already really... and going back to what i said before, if there can be a tent solely for breaks, why not this stuff? It's not a totally unreasonable request and from what I gather is a fairly popular request too.

yes, of course root is right. there are 2 wank-trance tents, a breaks tent, even a house tent, but no techno tent. they could easily demolish the pussy parlour and put in a techno thing, especially after all of last year's cries.

but now it's too late for that.

yeah a decent techno tent would be top banana :wackyhat:
i honestly cant see why the need two psy-trance tents/stages when its the most samey, repetative music at the entier festival.
im not a fan of acid techno or hardtek etc, (no 4/4 kicks over 140bpm for me thank you very much!) but would love to see more coverage of the detroit/minimal side of things, and stuff at the vitalic, laurent garnier, french/german end of the spectrum.

Lol... it's only because last year one of the girls that was in our group (she's one of my best mates, but a bit of a flowergirl type) hated nearly all the dance music (aside from breaks, ew) and kept dragging us off to the ID Spiral for all the cheesy chill-out stuff. I just got so agitated in there, all those people laying around half-asleep, I was like "I gotta get out of here - I gotta go see THE BUG!!"

I mean, I understand the need to have a chill-out area but spending all your time there... jeez. Might as well just get the Jack Johnson album on repeat and be done with it!
