Heavy-handed security? *merged*

Postby Sperge on 17 Jul 2006, 22:06

I'll have to start by saying that I witnessed no dodgy incidents involving security staff myself. However, people who I know and trust have spoken of incidents they witnessed such as purple naked dude (who was orange or red naked dude this year) being roughly turfed out of the main stage tent (and some say removed from the festival?). Others have spoken of festivalgoers being held in painful armlocks while their wristbands were checked. :?

Keeping the site secure is a hard job and personally I'm glad that some heavier duty security was around. My experience was that fence-jumping and petty crime was lower than last year. But some of the tales that are circulating about bad treatment of some punters are worrying. I understand that some incidents are already being investigated.

Did anyone here personally witness (rather than hear about) any such incidents?

I saw the Purple naked dude in his red guise be chased into the main tent, but then saw him a few hours later walking around so I doubt he was turfed out, unless there was more than one this year of course!

I was happy to see a visible security presence appear on the Friday after hearing that a girl in the tent a couple of metres away from ours had been robbed while she was alseep in her tent Thursday night. Having the security guys walking around was a deterrent I think. I did not see any heavy handedness myself, but was told by others that they saw them ejecting some ppl who had jumped the fence with a bit of force (as in holding them with some force, not hitting them).

Security came around and did a drive-by with a super-soaker on our camp.

Guess that doesn't count as heavy handed though :)

:( Complete bunch of tossers Sunday night they were, they were really up for a row until they were confronted by the ravers :) , we were actually told to stop cheering by some twat :cop: , i was threatened with ejection and my little philips stereo confiscated if didn't comply but we still partied so fuck you security i know you have a difficult job to do but some people skills are definetly required as things could have got very nasty, don't underestimate the ravers as we stick together in such predicaments  ha. Thankyou though Glade organisers for another Stonka of a weekend and do you have some sort of deal with the big man upstairs for such wonderful weather ? .

Seen some wasted guy get jumped by about 4 or 5 security meat-heads outside the main glade tent at about 4am Sat. The guy just looked really wasted and didn't look like he could harm a fly, but it still took 4 security guys to pick him up and throw him into the back of the van. There was some scuffling in the back of the van and the guy then jumped head first out of the van window (the watching crowd gave an almighty cheer!) The guy was then swiftly kicked and punched until he basically stopped moving. He was then put in the van for a second time... God only knows what happened to him after that

I saw a rather rowdy incident on the friday outside the liquid tent, right after vex'd had played the overkill,
Two security guards wrestling a guy to the floor and choking him, aparently for selling NOS!!!!! I dont know how much he had provoked them/retaliated but from what i saw it was a serious abuse of power.
Also herd about a security guard stangling someone :?
and had a small incident myself with one guy, who asked for a rizla, took the whole pack, then when my mate asked for them back threatened to search us for drugs and kick us out! Its cocks like this that give Stuart Security a bad name

I saw this as well. One of them had their foot up against his neck. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera on me, otherwise I'd have photographed it.

The previous 2 years, the security was in the background, not generally hassling the guests. This year we had a self-styled private militia trying to look 'ard posing in 4WDs and mounting police-style operations against anyone they suspected might be carrying or selling something naughty. They ruined many people's enjoyment, and still had little effect against fence-jumpers and tent robbers. I hope the organisers will be employing human beings again next year.

Everyone who was there has a story about the security and their shitty behaviour.
Perhaps one of the organisers would like to comment?

What has annoyed me is that the Glade organisers told us that the ticket price went up to give us an improved fence and an improved secrurity force; for one the fence was only bigger near the entrance, i met many people who had jumped. On the friday morning I heard many stories about tents being robbed so this improved" security obviously weren't doing that good a job. Then I hear numerous stories of the security being overly violent, even with people quite clearly mashed off their heads, this is something I thought Glade would have tryed to stop happening. Any slightly cleud up person knows that getting aggressive and shouting at someone who is fucked is pretty much the worst thing you can do. Most of us know that the drugs they were conviscating most probably went straight in their pockets, did they get searched themselves ever??? Last year having a security force that stayed away from the main dance areas and didn't look around specifically for mashed looking people to search. I do understand that the licensing means that drugs have to be looked for, but surely a search, conviscating the drugs and sending people on their way like in a lot of clubs these days would have been ok. I was lucky and had no personal expirience with bad security; the festival was amazing, the line up was amazing and the people I met were even more amazing. I just hope the organisers learn once again from this and manage to get a security force that do the job we all thought we were paying the extra for.

Hmmm, sounds suspiciously like that poster just got that tale from watching the "Pikey Gets Done" video on YouTube...

Some people reckon it was the Shadow crew who were doing the hard man thing rather than Stuart.

I can't really say either way, as I didn't personally witness any dodgy incidents (although I've heard similar stories from people whose word I trust).

I thought fencejumping and crime in general was well down on last year though. I do think the heavy mob are a necessary evil to control the perimeter (Stuart work outside the fence, not inside it, at Glastonbury). I'd prefer it if the Oxfam stewards are responsible for the interior and can call in the heavy mob when they need backup.

this is what i was talking about in the feedback thread. too tired to type more so will cut & paste:

Security: Did they get security on day release from Wormwood scrubs? I've never seen such awful policing. Aside from the fact that they were aggressively stopping & searching people on site (hello? when was that law passed??) and busted a few of my mates in a scary manner, they were generally appalling. Last year it was all stewards and gentle reprimands for flagrant drug-use.

Driving through the crowds in their pickups at 20+mph (seemingly only to pick up their mates who were too fat to walk) really scared me.

but worst of all was seeing four of them violently restraining a mashed and terrified skinny little bloke, throwing him to the floor, swearing at onlookers, then trying to bundle them into the van, smacking his head on the way, then giving up and holding him on the floor and shouting at him. he cried out that he just wanted some water and when i came forward and tried to give him some they actually told me to fuck off and shoved me backwards (and I've got my arm in a massive cast all strapped up! :o) Absolutely inappropriate wankers.
