Hooray Ravers at Glade?

Postby Sperge on 28 Aug 2007, 11:48

One person I know reckons he won't be back at Glade next year because, in his words, it's "been hijacked by Hooray Ravers".

I've never heard this expression before, so I asked him what he meant and he said the festival had been taken over by people who care little about the music or the festival ethos (e.g. minimising your impact on the environment) and basically just sit around in their camps monging out instead.

Anyone else feel that way? The vibe and social make-up of the festival is bound to change over the years and I think if people are saying it's not as good as it was "back in the day", it shows how much of an institution the Glade has already become.

I still think it has a proper havin' it vibe, although there are newer smaller festivals that are just as good. I think my main issue with the Glade is the obsession with selling more tickets in order to pay for bigger names. Please stop the expansion - it ain't broke, so don't fix it.

I can see what people mean, but I think it was largely due to weather. People monged out by their tents cos it was impossible to sit on the grass. Also, the mud was a disincentive to keep it nice and tidy. Most people were too knackered to think about that sort of thing.
From what I've heard, there were more dreadlocked types in the first year, but Ididn't notice too much of a change since then. The Overkill crowd seems to have become larger (perhaps bringing less 'fluffy' types?) This might also have something to do with Antiworld being the previous week - perhaps pulling more psy trance peeps away.

The real twats are the ones who go and spend all their time moaning about Hooray ravers and not bothering to go and dance cos their sulkingly walking through the campsite sneering at the people who've gone for a quick sit and a ciggarette.

haha. Well said there....

If it's a festival with such a sick line-up and which is now so infamous it's going to become more mainstream and therefore attract a different crowd to the original one. Nothing you can do about it - just shows how phat the Glade is!!

Jeez, don't encourage him...

I can't be certain, as the person I had this conversation with isn't around at the moment (let's call him X for now), but I think it was a case of X and his partner and friends going to the music most of the time but any time they'd slip back to the camp, the "hoorays" had apparently never shifted all day. That's the gist of what was being said, I think, and X was talking about last year as well as this.

But otherwise, yes I agree with you, 118girl, the crowd is bound to change. X was perfectly aware how crowds change over time, his point was that for him it had got to the point where he wants to move on, which is fair enough.

hmmm I can only base it on 2006's Glade, but I think you make it how you want it to be, I am sure if one didnt focus on the pedople around the tents and more on the people at the dance tents he would have seen a proper up for it crownd , always open for a chat and very knowledgable about there music ...

I spoke to a few people whp's first time it was and they were in aw of it ... nothing like what they had seen (creamfirlds, globl etc.. ) and were equally as chatty friendly , up for a laugh ..... tehy also noticed how friendly everyone was and was blown away by it .... behaviour breeds behaviour , as they say ...

If they don't move that means more space for me to dance like a proper head case and theres plenty of others who are up for it so I can't say I missed them.

Though I do agree, less up for it people = a bad thing.

I have to agree on both counts, it is cool to have a chillaxe back at the old tent to regroup & gather one's self and sometimes these can be a little longer than expected :P for obvious reasons

But also it's wicked to have the room to dance like a nutter so if people just want to come for the atmo etc and just chill byu their tents all weekend that is fine by me (does seem a shame though) :P

There did seem to be a marked increase in the amount of people either taking or looking for ket this year, and certainly amongst the people I know it's become massively popular in the last year or so. Certainly not the only reason but it no doubt has a contribution to make to the problem.

This year was massively affected by the weather and it just wasn't possible to mingle as much as in previous years. That said, maybe all those monging out under their gazebos or tents would just have been monging under the trees instead.

But considering how many people Glade has apparently been hijacked by - muggers, ketheads, mongs, scallies, people with attitude - I noticed remarkably few of them compared to how many people were having a great time.

blame the techno tent, ket victims follow techno. joke :) but there was more k about this year. but thats a general pattern across raves lately. i dont see a problem with it personally, none of them offended me, no one got robbed by rabid ket heads so why moan? i know for sure i spent a bit of time back at the tent with people this year, becuase it was nice to sit down and chill somewhere dry.

You can say what you like about blaming wonks, or different type of people coming to glade because it's bigger or whatever but what it all comes down to is what you enjoy doing.

I went to glade with a group of around 20 odd friends all camping together. We were all well different, some people were into their wonks, sum charlie, sum gurners, odas didn't take any drugs at all. And the same with that some people were always busting down to the breaksday tent whereas odas culdn't keep away from the psy-trance. All of my mates went there and did their own thing, I had the time of my life just going from stage to stage completly sober. Whereas two of my best mates stayed at the tents the whole time, not even venturing down to get food, they were drinking a little, but not really, but they hadn't gone their for the music they had gone for the atmosphere and to have a good time with their friends, and both of them are defintly coming again this year they loved, time of their lives, surely that is what matters.

Welcome new person. :)

I haven't a clue what a "wonk" is.

Even Urban Dictionary only gives definitions of "policy wonk" etc. I'm guessing you mean consumers of Special K?

a wonk is someone who likes K, i call k wonky.

i dont have a problem with anyone on drugs TBH, if thats what you wanna do then go for it! same with booze or sober people. a festival is a place where people come together and ive nevfer had hassle at a rave or festival even though im surrounded by people on different vibes and wavelegnths.

i think its a bit weird to moan about people who were sitting in the campsite, why should anyone care about that? if they were such a "good festival goer" then they would be down the front of one of the arenas aving it and not noticing people chilling in the camping area. :D

To be fair, his main beef was with people not picking up after themselves and generally not giving a shit about their impact on their surroundings, a bit like the cocks who are ruining the free party scene. I see where he's coming from, although I left behind a perfectly good tent and other stuff so I've no room to talk.

I met a couple of hippies at a party the other night. They said the whole festival scene has been dead for a few years for them now due to the entire crowd being a load of part time hippy middle class wankers. I thought this to be slightly harsh, but very true, I told them I quite enjoyed being a part time hippy middle class wanker as it meant I could enjoy the best of both worlds. If I hadn't been in such a good mood I wouldve launched into an entire counter argument about true hippys these days being elitiest fart sniffers who can't even see the orginal ideals of peace and love to all cos their sitting on their own overinflated egos with their head lodged firmly in the clouds.

ahh see i have a BIG problem with the wankers that trash places unecessaary. exactly the sort of people ruining the freparty scene as someone else said. at glade it was different, leaving your tent isnt so bad because all people have to do is take it down. but leaving litter lying about everywhere, not hard to clean it up is it. i cleaned up all the litter from our campsite, including fab butts which werent even mine! i left the bin bag there but it was sealed properly and the whole area was spotless.
