All Tomorrow's Parties Dec 07 anyone??

Postby youllneverbe » 03 Aug 2007, 10:54

Just booked me and my friends a 4-bed ticket for ATP this December. Never been before, this one should be a belter. It's curated by Portishead, who will be playing a whole set of original songs for the first time in 10 years (apparently), plus they've managed to rope in the mighty Aphex Twin! Plus a whole load of interesting bands like Autolux, Glenn Branca's guitary weirdness, Thurston Moore solo, Julian Cope, Black Mountain and lots of others. And a whole load of doomy droney noise merchants like Sunn0))), Earth (!!), Boris, and Om.

Anyone else going??

December eh? Nice and warm then! Aphex would be good, not too bothered about the rest... What's the deal with All Tomorrow's Parties? Sometimes it's really electronic orientated (i.e. when Autechre curated in 03) but mostly it aint. Shame.

I've been struggling to get my head round the ATP thing for ages. AFX would be good, but it seems like they've thrown him in there just cos they can, they have the muscle to get him to play and he has new stuff to flog.
ATP strikes me as very high brow, and the line up does fall flat after Portishead and AFX.

I'm not meaning to critisice anyone that's going, lots of my mates are really looking forward to it, but it completely befuddles me.

But if you go, see sparklehorse, they are lovely, uber chilled plinky-ety plonk-ety music. Like indie chillout....see that how pretentious i think ATP would be - it forces me to use the owrds indie chillout

Portishead are curating it. They picked him to play.

It's a little bit high-brow but it's not a requirement for entry. Plus, the lineup doesn't fall flat if you like interesting rock music or a bit of experimental noise-y, droney stuff. Which I do. I thought someone else might too.

Butlins these days is like a huge mall thing, so the weather's only really an issue going to and from your chalet. Haven't been to a fest there yet, though (only ATP I've been to was when they were still at Pontins). The deal regarding the lineup is that the organisers approach someone to curate it (usually the festival headliners, but they've also had Matt Groening do one over in the USA), and they then select the bands (although I think the Fall have some sort of residancy!). This one looks really tempting, especially as they've now announced Jerry Sadowitz will be appearing too.

Fair play! Sorry to have ravaged your post. My mates have been buggin me to go and it was an oppurtunity to let off some steam. Sorry :fear:
I think the set up would be superduper if i liked some of the acts. I keep wishing they do some thing wrong music style-eee there as that would be a class weekend.
I may complain aboput 'high-brow' but i'm as snobby about music as they come.
*enter the hypocrite* :D

edited cos i sooo cannot spell

I've always fancied it, but I don't know 3 other people to share a chalet with.
I won't be around this december anyway, but maybe one day....

Well, here goes then:

BORIS: 3 piece Japanese drone/doom metal band. Very loud. Have done collaborations with Sunn0))), Merzbow and Christ knows who else... lots of people. They have a massive gong and are great live.
OM: Bass-and-drums unit featuring 2/3 of the pioneering doom metal band Sleep. Never heard 'em, but critical acclaim etc.
EARTH: Low frequency drone originators from 91/92... their latest stuff is different though.
SUNN0))): Bowel-loosening psychedelic drones. Horrible in the best way possible. Unbelievably loud.
JULIAN COPE: from Teardrop Explodes I think, Krautrock advocate. Should be good.
ONEIDA: Weird angry indie/garage rock, quite strange and very good.
BLACK MOUNTAIN: Cross American stoner rock and American 80s indie/punk, add 60s acid rock/pop.
SEASICK STEVE: Blues, as in 1930s style
THURSTON MOORS: Leader of Sonic Youth, reportedly playing "songs" solo, rather than avant-garde weirdness.
AUTOLUX: 3 piece indie/post-rock band, repetitive beats, interesting guitar and bass lines.
GLENN BRANCA: Influential New York noise rock pioneer, involved in freaky guitar experiments, usually featuring a lot of people on stage at once playing loud. Special guests billed too..... I hope it's Dylan Carlson (Earth) and the Sunn0))) boys...

ATAVSIST - Manc drone/doom band, like very slow thrash at about 20 (twenty) bpm
SUNNo))) are definitely playing also but you've alredy said that so I'm not sure why you thought they'd be special guests?
PJ HARVEY also playing

I'm going with 4 other people, I know the singer from Atavist thru my girlfriend and so I've got an excuse to leg it for some chemical-induced dancing should she prefer to swallow some bass with those guys :D

I was thinking they'd be special guests with Glenn Branca's group. I know they like to incorporate themselves in any and all things loud and droney, and what with them being there anyway...

Who went?

This was ace. First ATP and really impressed by the overall setup, although if you didn't have Portishead bands for the Friday night it was a bit of a mare finding anything else to do for 2 hours - they should have put better acts on, there was nobody on the main stage and EVERYONE else was queueing for Sadowitz. Ended up with a wristband for his extra Saturday show, which was a good bit of "winging it" from the organisers I reckoned.

Highlights of the weekend:

Sunn capping a really silly, boring, messy set (cheapened by the fire alarm siren going off and the large twiggy caterpillar at the front waving about) by having a proper fight and walking offstage, well funny.

Aphex. Twice. Fuck yeah.

Portishead being rather pleasant and having such mad tastes in music (assuming they actually choose any of the artists of course).

Atavist playing at more than 20bpm for a change :panic: severely moshable, ace.

My Earplugs Image

I'll definitely go again but will be doing self catering next time, I can't afford to eat pub meals twice a day for a weekend, it nearly killed our bank manager!
