Ans running the NY marathon

Postby Sperge » 30 Sep 2008, 20:49

In case you don't already know, Glade supremo Ans is running the New York marathon:

I am running the New York Marathon (26.2 miles!) on November 2nd 2008 and am looking to raise money for a school that looks after vulnerable children particularly those that are victims of the epidemic that is AIDS.

Please read on.

I lived in Cape Town for 5 years and saw the huge sadness caused by the scourge of AIDS. South Africa is experiencing one of the worlds most hectic AIDS epidemics in the world and at the end of last year there were around 5.7 million people living with HIV in South Africa, and almost 1,000 AIDS deaths occurring every day.

The problem is huge and one of the most gutting side effects is the great number of totally innocent children that are affected either as having HIV themselves or as orphans.

James House is a wonderful project based in Hout Bay near Cape Town. It's primarily a Child and Youth Care Centre that specialises in giving support to young and vulnerable people particularly those affected by AIDS.

Please see their website for more info -

http://www.jameshouse.org.za

It relies on donations to keep going and I feel that it is a great and important cause.

So please sponsor me on this run!

Doug Stanhope wrote:You know what pisses me off about aid commercials? They say "this woman in Africa has already lost four children. Without help, she will lose her fifth child." How can I have any respect for someone who keeps having MORE kids in that situation? They're forcing these kids to live a slow, torturous death sentence from the moment they're born. You'd think after the first four times, they'd get a clue and stop fucking reproducing! The only way they could justify having more children to me is if they were producing them for food. Show me an ad with an African family holding up the marinated arms of their newborn twins and we'll talk about that donation.

That's Doug Stanhope for ya. Stupid, but fucking funny.

Incidentally I do intend to sponsor Ans (once I can get onto FB outside work), because as futile as donating money to any third world cause really is, I like to feel like I'm doing something ineffective to not help very much. Sponsoring events is a nice gesture.

I also pay double the suggested CAAT subscription, which I hope has a much greater effect on reducing the suffering of far more people. I'm probably wrong about that too, but I don't care, I despise the arms trade.

So do I!

I hadn't even heard of the guy, I googled him and he's apparently regarded as a new Bill Hicks in some quarters. I haven't seen much of his material yet, I don't think he hits the spot in quite the same way as Hicks or Carlin did, but maybe I've just seen the wrong vids.

Like shaky, I just didn't find this particular comment funny. It wasn't even relevant to the topic, as far as I could see, since the guy was talking about the futility of "aid" for starving Africans whereas Ans is simply raising money for a specific AIDS (note the extra S) project. If Ans was doing a Saint Bob Geldof stunt, then there might have been a point. But Ans wasn't setting himself up as a saviour of Africa or being able to end world poverty. He is simply doing something positive that will help a few children in South Africa in a very real, practical way; he is not claiming to do anything more than that.

I wanted to avoid commenting on this issue because I see it as a cheap, attention-seeking distraction from a very worthy cause, so it's an Epic Fail to post this but I felt these points needed to be made. I'll just ignore the distraction from this point on and suggest everyone else does the same.

Good work, Ans, I wish you the very best of luck in this.

Ans did it!

I completed it! It was at times agonizing, exhausting and just horribly grim but also amazing and I couldn't be happier to have it behind me..

I started very well and though my knee problem was reminding me it was there I managed to complete the first half in about 1.45 hours which is pretty
damn good. However I started to find my left knee excruciatingly telling me to lay off and at about 14-15 miles I had to start slowing down.. At one
point I stopped in a medics tent to have a massage from a lovely girl from Harlem which helped but the last 2 or 3 miles were absolutely horrendous!
Anyway, job done... My final time was 5 hours 27. The second half took me 3.45 hours! Bloody nightmare..

I often use a thing called Nike plus that's basically a digital pedometer and you can see my run and how it went by going here if interested -

http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http:// ... C283631792

You need to click the big green sausage on the right of the list of runs... I forgot to turn it off hence the distance and time being longer.

Anyway, thanks for all the support! I'm going to tie it altogether today and tomorrow to show you how much we raised...
