Yea I've seen it done a few times, never had a go but it looks fun, would be the sorta thing I'd enjoy playin. Have you ever seen those "thunder in a can" (fuck knows its real name) instruments, I made myself one of them. You can't do massive amounts of things with it but you can get rhythmical patterns going on not just random bursts of thunderyness. (If you havn't seen one it's the cardboard bit from bog roll with a wooden/plastic plate glued into the bottem that has a spring attached in the centre)

But the weird instrument I lust after the most is a hang (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rd58pPgmivI <--Altho thats recorded with a contact mic so isn't quite its natural sound, look at some others for that) portable steel drum vibes, you couldn't fail :) The only trouble is you have to fly out to switzerland, go to the makers and get it made specialy for you which costs about a grand not includeing travel. And they only do it a few times a year in stricly limited numbers. :(

Yea not many people have heard of hangs, the people who make them like that exclusivity factor. I talked to one bloke who used to be a fairly average percussionist working hard but still never really getting many gigs. Then he got a hang and suddenly as he traveld around everyone and anyone wanted to jam with him so now hes got loads of connections. But yea its a beautiful sound, nice and verby :)
