I've eaten alligator meat. And yes, it tastes "like chicken".

I've had crocodile, wild boar, kangeroo and buffalo steak's all on the same plate and they all tasted like mushroom sauce and balsamic vinager. Fucking gastro pubs with expensive ingerdients and wanky chefs.

When on a Louisiana swamp tour, I quite enjoyed looking an alligator in the eye while eating an alligator sandwich. Wonder if he realised while looking at me as dinner that I was eating one of his cousins?

He probably did realise - they're smart, these alligators. You probably put the fear of Godzilla into him!!!

I've eaten crocodile and I too thought it tasted like dry chicken insofar as it was white meat, quite non-specific in flavour, but a bit less stringy. Frog's legs have the same texture and I find that monkfish and shark meat are similar too.

I just had to write an email to Hai Quynh Tran in Vietnam. I had to resist starting with

That is a bit "Millie Tant" to be honest, Leah.

If you're talking about trafficked women who have been forced into prostitution then yes, I'd agree it's not really "consent".

If it's a woman who is doing it of her own free will, then of course it's consent, no matter how tainted that consent may be in your eyes.

Lest we forget, the "Greenham wimmin" types believed that married women (or women living with men) were every bit as much prostitutes as street hookers. So if we link their view to your argument here, all straight men are rapists.

Well, dunno about you Sperge but I certainly am!

See, logic can be amusing.

There is another school of thought that reckons very few prostitutes are doing it "of their own free will", as they can see no other way out. Once you've been a prostitute I'm not sure there's many career paths you can follow. Social services (helping prostitutes) seems to be a common choice. Full time professional drug addict seems to be another.

Making it illegal hasn't stopped it, and never will, so perhaps it's time to try something else radical? If it doesn't work it doesn't work; try something else.

Either way, cheap hookers and high class escorts should always be treated as separate issues. Not sure where you draw the line though. (I would say your average escort is simply a hooker without a drug addiction, but I'm not basing this opinion on anything other than supposition and sweeping statements.)

i'm honestly not sure that's true. 'free will' is a bit of a blurry concept under certain conditions.

anyway, i just felt like countering... (andrea made me do it :fear: )

Indeed, but surely the same could be said of so many other things? Lots of people are doing things they don't really want to do because the money is better than they might get doing something else.

I can certainly see that buying sexual services off a woman who lives under constant fear of violence from some pimp is tantamount to rape. I think extending the argument to include those women who do it for purely economic reasons (i.e. they can make more money from it than they can elsewhere) is a lot weaker.

Not that I can claim any real insights into this trade of course. I can't see the pleasure in having sex with someone who is only doing it because you're paying them, frankly, but each to their own.

agreed. making it illegal makes it a million times more dangerous, but the chances of progressive thinking on this are about as slim as the same regarding drugs. it's very frustrating.

hmmm, economic reasons underpinned by a history of being subjected to sexual abuse (as i understand it, this is quite often the case)... for me that seriously undermines the free choice point.
