More and more DJs seem to be using them now, only the diehard turntablists insist on using vinyl for their whole set these days it seems.

I need to get a pair but the cost of Pioneer CDJ-1000s, which are basically the industry standard in clubs now, is pretty scary. I think I'll get a pair of Denons to learn on (maybe even some Numarks if I'm really skint) and maybe progress to the Pioneers later.

As you said it seems scarey. I'd feel as if am showing off id i used cd dex, strange. Just love techies; too loyal. Either that or a am shite dj :D

It boils down to supporting your local record store tae, i think digital and cd seems to betray this (from my small mind anyway)

Yeah, but you can still do what Calla (shakyjane) and her dad do (they're both DJs). They still buy some vinyl and rip it to wav themselves off a Technics deck, then burn it to CD. Best of both worlds that way.

Oh, and don't forget to visit the GladTalk music store to buy the latest tunes at 320k mp3 or pure wav. :)

Why buy vinyl and rip it to cd to play out wae? Why not just play vinyl from -A to + Z

its tis the fun element.

Coz lugging about a crate of vinyl is fucking hassel, why bother when you can do everything you can on vinyl with CDs and not get back pain.

Personaly I still love my vinyl, still buy it, still mix with it and its nice to have a collection (Altern-8 Full on Mask Hysteria picture disk FTW)

However when I play out (not often) / at partys (more often) I take CDs as well as there are some tunes that are fucking wicked that have never seen vinyl/I can't afford them but have the artists album on CD. I don't have my own CD decks but tbh they are fucking simple to mix on, easier then vinyl, you just need to get someone to spend five mins with you showing you the controls.

well you use whatever makes the most sense to you as a DJ. jungle/drum n bass, mostly vinyl. but psytrance/hard dance is mostly digital cd/mp3 these days. im a vinyl fiend, i love it, but i also have some old skool cd decks, not rigged them up yet but will do once i move back home, ive used cd mixers before, i dont see which one is better except for certain genres where its normal to mix on either, if that makes snese.

reggae for example - someone mixing reggae with cds is a tool. 7" or STFU

Innit.

And 7", I have a few and I have to say, blutaked onto 12" is the only way I can mix with em pretty much, do I just not have a delicate enough touch? (oh and piano + violin break from elenor rigby = the best thing to mix in evar)

[quote]I see your back pain and raise you a portable head unit playing tracks off an 8GB USB stick.[/quote

To me a pair of cdj1000's is pretty much the perfect thing to mix off. They are easy to use workhorse cunts, well built, sound crystal clear and have plenty of toys (sorry, "creative tools") The interface isn't emulateing vinyl because tbh I think thats daft, vinyl works like vinyl, digital things work like digital things, what the CDJ1000 does is allow you to do the same sortof things you do with vinyl but easily translated into the digital domain. No other human -> music interface handles plain mixing with digital data better imo.

A cd collection (entirely backup of course, if its nicked then its only cost you the price of a few cdrs) isn't too much hassel to carry around. And then you have cds, a standard format, no need to rely on the infrastructure of laptops etc haveing to be pluged in. I also like being able to search through disks and put them on instead of folders and lists. Plus carrying a laptop around = a bitch, if you're just mixing and not utaliseing the laptop to do proper live stuff theres no point carrying one around.
