Dundee - etymology question and random thought

Postby baldmosher » 19 Aug 2008, 12:50

Is Dundee so called because it's the port of the Tay?

My logic follows that Dún Laoghaire is the port of Dublin which is on the Liffey, which sounds to me like a reasonable assumption.

My knowledge of Gaelic is almost zero, but I can read Welsh even if I understand almost none of it, and I'm starting to get better at reading Gaelic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dundee

Dundee (Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Dèagh)

The name "Dundee", Gaelic Dùn Dèagh, incorporates the place-name element dùn, fort, possibly referring to the hill-fort, traces of which survive on Dundee Law. The meaning of Dundee is unknown, though it has been suggested it could mean 'Fort of Fire', perhaps referring to beacons lit on the Law, or 'Fort of the God'.

I didn't know any of that - and now I'm about to figure out how I move this thread to LU&E - nobody do anything because I want to do it and I'll remove parts of your body if you do.

Is it just me or does the Dèagh bit obviously refer to the river? Anyone know what the Gaelic for Tay is?

EDIT:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Tay#History
Several places along the Tay take their names from it, or are believed to have done so:

Seconded. Calla, that's really poor for someone who claims to be a socialist. Your co-workers were collectively withdrawing their labour, which is their only weapon against the capitalists' ownership of the means of production, and you've shamelessly undermined their struggle. Enjoy your pieces of silver, Judas. :(

Just yanking your chain, shaky, but was just a tad surprised. :o

Despite my rants on here at times, I've never crossed a picket line in my life, so it did shock me a bit.

I really dont see what fucking difference its going to make anyway - at least I had the balls to cross my own picket line, unlike all the shitcunts who went to another office

I dont see it as me crossing a picket line because im not really an employee there - ive got about 3 weeks left and thats it - and i probably caused more trouble than i was worth because i spent 2 hours working on stuff that would have been easily done the next day, that took about an hour and half then i fucked about on the net for the rest of the day - and possibly transferred a load of calls to the wrong place because i didnt have anyone to check with

I've never crossed a picket line because I've never had the opportunity.

I'm sure I would if I could though. Strikes are shit.

Re: Dundee - etymology question and random thought

Since it caused a fuss I will explain my thoughts.

Strikes really are shit. They're the last desperate resort of a workforce that really shouldn't have to resort to strikes, and not many of the recent strikes I've heard about are particularly justified IMO. It's not like people are doing it because of crippling working conditions, or crippling pay, because the minimum wage has just "levelled the playing field", as many predicted it would. (My dad is chaplain for Birchwood Fire Station and I heard all the ins and outs of that particular debate... it was mostly hogwash from what I could make out, but firefighters do deserve pay relative to the danger and responsibility of the job. If you make a mistake, people and coworkers can die. There's not many other jobs like that but the fact that it was part time and you could have a second job meant that the income wasn't in question, which made the whole argument a bit hollow.)

I have nothing against strikers, or picket lines, and I do honk at them when I see them, and I enjoy the Schadenfreude aspect of being at the mercy of a striking workforce, but part of the reason I would never work in a job that might require strike action is that I disagree with having the option of a strike in principle. I'd rather just change job.

And as I've said before, Mr Troll, I'm not a "labour voter", I vote for my local MP, who is pretty good.

IMO this strike was a farce anyway, and every other fucking strike - maybe its time people thought of another way of fighting the system because one way or another management & HR find ways to deal with the problems. And people who have jobs that essential - such as home care workers, meals services, residential unit workers all still work because it would be too cruel not to. Strikes dont cripple anymore - I think the only way to make a difference in a workplace is to fight the bastards yourself and make your superiors jobs so much more difficult until you get what you want. This helps if you've got people doing exactly the same thing at the same time.

People just like having people to look down on - and thats the only real thing I believe strikes are for now - noone was arsed whether their strike worked or not - just who was in on that day. STOP WATCHING BILLY ELLIOT AND GET A FUCKING GRIP!!

"Oh, I'd rather be a picket than a scab..."

Nah, that's a bit mean. If you're in a temp job and it's a dispute that doesn't directly concern you, then fair enough these days I guess. But it is depressing that Maggie's ideological victory over trade unionism in this country is still intact. Collective action is still the best weapon workers in this country have - which is why the bosses go to such lengths to ensure you don't believe it. :(

Minimum wage roughly equates to £12,000pa. That's enough to live on.

You need at least double that to live alone.

I'm not sure thats right about minimum wage

at the moment i only work part time - because this was the job i could get in the short amount of time i could get it
. I get about £13,000 pro rata - and end up with about £600 a month.

My last job I got £11,500 a year working full time. I ended up with about £650 a month but it would have been a bit more than that had I have not been charged basic rate.

I'm pretty sure with the £11.5 k I wasnt on minumum wage tho! I am positive there's people working for less than what I earn.

i just looked up - minimum wage can be as small as about £9000 pa for people between 18 & 21 and about £11,000 for people over 22

i was calculating minimum wage*37*52 and then rounding up to the nearest 1000
