MCs, Shite or saviours???

Postby Slypsy » 10 Jun 2006, 02:05

Well, may as well use this negative universe forum. Be a waste to see it and not use it. . . :D

Been having a good night and listened to some nice tunes. I am a fan of many genres and have been played some great tunes by friends, but i must say, is it just me or are 99% of all MCs shite and the music would be better off without them. :?

Just wondering what everyone else thinks? I admit they have their place. The Conrad version of Seba, Planetary funk alert, although the lyrics are pretty pretensious and it just works. Why is it all the shit people can'r just stop?? I mean, i know people have to practice and shit but if i was learning violin i wouldn't practise in public. :fear: :fear:

what sort of percentage of people feel my pain?????

Why not just say 100% shite and be done with it. I find it totally annoying.

a lot of them are shite, agreed,

however some of them (i.e. dynamite/ gq/ navigator/ foxy) are quite good and add an element of enthusiasm to the dance. as is what i think anyway. people like skiba/shabba/ecksman/ det etc are quite boring nowadays cuz they dont really have anything new to say. eksman was heavy when he first hit the scene about 6/7 years ago.

a good example is the 2nd room opstairs (top room) at the brizzle academy when they have the dnb nights on. the main room is generally shite but upstairs is well lively and more fun! the mc's there (local mc's are generaly better than the ones you see at slammin/ global/ 1nation etc), add flow to the rhythm.

mc's at hardcore gabba nights are heavy too, dunno how they keep up!

Nah, it's not meant for normal chat threads like this. It's just a dumping ground for deadlocked threads that have turned into Groundhog Day.

Anyway, back to MCs. Good ones are an indispensable part of some acts (e.g. Spee of Dreadzone), other ones are... erm... surplus to requirements.

I dont mind the occasional line or two from an MC, or a shout during a breakdown, but sometimes they dont know when to shut up and let the tune play...

I love Fabric club in London, but the DnB MCs there never ever shut up and it sucks balls bigtime. Now I only go to Fabric for the Breaks nights...

MCs SHUT UP PLEASE THANKS :wackyhat:

Usually MCs really piss me off, I've heard quite a few amazing sets completely ruined by an MC that just wouldn't shut up, and it's usually in dnb sets! I think the problem with most of these MCs is that they think they are more important than the music, which they most certainly are not! I do think though that some MCs can really add something to the music, and it's the ones that don't talk a lot that manage it. For example I love Robbie Dee, Ribbz, and Sharkey etc. All these people are totally on the same level as the ravers, they add to the music and they know when to shut up!!!

id agree with the statement that 99% of MC'ing is totally shite. there r a very few ppl who lay exception to this tho.....for any brizzle peeps, u shud know MC Jakes, hes a gd lad, bloody nice bloke to, and a few others, but i have NO time for bellends like Skiba, Shabba, Fearless, Eksman etc. etc....useless bunch. go play with Pendulum.
This is the moment they've all been waiting for!.......

Depends on the style of the music and the MC innit.

Most music styles don't need an MC. For example, if I saw someone MCing over a psytrance or techno said I'd be mortified, but if over breakz or dnb it's cool.

There are very few good MC's though. Ribbz, MC MC, they're the legends.

I like MC's - i think that (when they're decent) they add to the music, esp. D'n'B. Their lyrical flex adds to the rolling bass and scatty beats. In the same way that screaming goes really well with heavy metal guitar riffs and double-kick drums.

However, there are many shit mc's out there, and most of them should learn to shut the fuck up.

But overall - yay to mcing

what.....the MC's called the 3rd rewind in a row?!.....for fucks sake just let the song play!

I like good MC's, bad ones really get my goat. was raving to Status the other week and mc foxy kept calling for a rewing (after doing loads already) so status kept on rocking and foxy jus stopped the deck saying "i hate this fucking song"
i was loving it, what a twat

:x most mcs piss me off no end. most of them just chat, chat chat about shit all - your in the drum n bass arena, listein to drum n bass, dancing away, when the fucin mc going "HOLD TIGHT, DRUM M BASS INSIDE THE PLACE. YOUR LISTENIN TO THE SOUNDS ON DRUM N BASS, BIG UP DRUM N BAS CREW" etc etc AS IF you thought you was at a fuckin psy trance night or somehting. ten if your lucky you get one who shuts up for small intervals, or if your lucky or unlucky, you get to hear them sometimes, and most of them dont half caht shit.
the best mcs are the ones that look like they are enjoying themselves, the ones who iteract with the crowd, adter all there there to get you going. and most important the ones who big up the DJ, and give the dj some space to shine eg. by shutting up for good moments in songs. think one of the best mcs i no for that is sharkey, (hardcore), hes a wicked entertainer, dosent hog the limelight and has a wicked gurn. he always looks at people like their human, smiles, gets the crowd hyped. the worst one is who ever the knob or knobs are that have mcd for dj hype every time ive seen him, HYPE HPYE HYPE SWITCH!! HYPE HYPE BRRRAAAP BRTAAAPPP... sigh...

I can do without MCs for the most part, but sometimes they do add to the mix. The last decent MC I heard was with DJ Patife (Brazilian D&B DJ) and he had a very soulful voice and style. Almost singing along with the tracks and it worked very well with the latin style almost liquid D&B being played.

However there is one type of music that I think MCs really make the difference and that is old skool dub music. Go along to any Trojan, Abu Shanti or Soul Jazz dub night that try to recreate the original dub sound systems of old then you need an MC. The word MC originates from these guys, and the good ones make the show. Two singing along to the mix and two geeing the crowd up at the last Trojan night I went to and it worked very well.

The world of music could survive very easily without MC's. Their infernal yabbering ruins the music. The best MC's are the ones that say the least....and if thats the case then they may as well pack up their mics and shout over all the music they own at home!
