Im looking to buy some monitors for my set up turntables and a mixer) in the spare room, preferably active monitors. can anyone recommend a good make or pair of monitors as i know very little about them. Also what sort of specs should i be looking for on them? I am looking to spend between £100 - 200, but probably closer to £150, i will probably buy them off the internet as it is cheaper.

Yeah, I'm on the lookout for some decent monitors for the spare room too. I don't want to lug my main amp and speakers from the living room up there, after all.

Bear in mind, though, that Richer Sounds can come up with separates that will knock the socks off any active speakers, e.g. they're doing a Cambridge Audio A1 (a very decent domestic amp) and a pair of Tannoy F1s (decent monitor speakers) for just under £200 all-in.

Worthy of serious consideration unless you really, really need the space, I reckon.

But if it absolutely must be active speakers, you'll be hard pushed to do better than M-Audio. They start at £69.99 for a pair of Studio Pro3s (but I'm not sure they'll be heavy duty enough for you). They have some beefier products here (note prices are in US dollars, so halve the price for pounds :))

DJ Monitors and Studio monitors are very differnt beasts, for production work you want that pure flat frequency response and clarity right accross the board and that comes at a price, also means they blow up easily, not good for DJing on, esspecialy if your fairly new, your hand could slip playin with the EQs and send horribly distorted signals to them and POP, goodbye your £200 active monitors.

For DJ monitors you want low punchy bass and not much else (well, as clear as possible) your best off buying a cheap bit of second hand PA (thats all it ever is in clubs anyway) with a tidy little amp with clip protection (and heat protection if your partial to long sessions at high volumes) Something where you don't care too much if it gets knackered and can make the music pump as it should do.

For studio monitors, Yamaha and Tannoy are the way to go (if you've got under a grand to spend!)
For DJing, a second hand 1K rig is the way to go! Or even just some nice home stereo speakers. Depends if you want pleasant sound or loud sound.
