New Digital Musical Instruments coming soon perhaps ?

Postby Darchigan » 09 Jan 2011, 18:14

I thought I'd share this pipe dream :) With all of these touch sensitive screens and motion sensors and even 3d displays there must be a new generation of totally computer based musical instruments over the horizon, something that goes beyond what keyboards can already do.

I think a lot could be done with very large touch and pressure sensitive tablet screens, with a motion sensor built in and a pair of system connected gloves worn by the musician so that the instrument can recognize and respond to certain traced shapes and patterns.

Customising the instrument interface and the sound of the instrument via the software is also another excitng posibility, as is breaking down the distinction between a played recording and a live performance by interecting in real time with part or parts of the song.
I'm off, Goodbye :)

Yeh both the Eigenharp and Time Exile's demo of the Finger and the Mouth are definately in the area that I thinking of though watching my daughter playing sports games (she noramlly does not like sport) on her new Nintendo Wii leads me to believe that more radical stuff is possible, maybe moving away from virtual software devices that emulate the physical devices with software interfaces that are driven by what the IT can do to the sound.

The Beamz device is very close to what I was thinking of though I'll bet this new class of device could be taken much further, just crossing the beams looks like a bit of a limitation and I'll bet much more could be done with a proper motion controller like the hacked xbox kinect device.

And I love the skoog device.
