new on rephlex...

Forthcoming Releases:-
CAT 196 EP Wisp "Katabatic"
CAT 197 EP J.K. "I.S.C."
CAT 198 EP DMX Krew "Wave Funk (Part 1)"
CAT 199 EP Boom Blaster "Boom Blaster"

also exclusive Rephlex / Braindance digital downloads coming soon!

Wisp's LP the shimmering hour is now going to be an EP but don't fear the album is coming soon and yes it sounds great.
Ed DMX told me ages ago that he had a new 12" coming out on rephlex about a year ago.
as for Boom Blaster that is a Aleksi Perälä / Ovuca alias, fans of his recent Project V LP will enjoy :)
and J.K. - I.S.C. EP is a new AFX continuing with the post analord / Tuss sound but with a wonky electro edge (think Rustie's Cafe De Phresh 12" instrumentals but with a Braindance twist and some 303's)

Can you explain the significance of this for those of us who don't think the sun shines out of RDJ's arse?

I would say its very significant that an indepenent, british record label producing quality underground electronic music can survive for so long...

Discogs wrote: Founded in 1991 by Richard D. James and Grant Wilson-Claridge.

In 1989, Grant Wilson-Claridge started DJ-ing at a club located just along the coast from Newquay, Cornwall. Called the Bowgie - Cornish for cattle shed - the venue seems at first sight an unlikely place to inspire the birth of Rephlex records, a label recently dubbed by NME "the coolest record label in the world".

Wilson-Claridge explains that he and Aphex Twin used to DJ on alternate weeks. He was intrigued by the music Aphex Twin was playing and on closer inspection discovered that he was not playing records but rather his own tapes. On noticing this, Wilson-Claridge suggested that they press up some records. In the beginning, committing Aphex Twin's recordings to vinyl was a way of making music he and his friends wanted to hear. Due to their geographical dislocation they did not have access to the music they wanted to hear and so they decided to create their own. "We were doing it for a laugh" explains Grant, "We're still doing it now".

Indeed they are. Having attracted a following in Cornwall, early Aphex Twin tracks like Analogue Bubblebath and Didgeridoo were picked up by London stations like Kiss FM. Soon the artist was the object of popular and critical admiration outside Cornwall, and the fledgling Rephlex label took the decision to move to London in 1992.

In spite of this, Rephlex has not allowed one figure to dominate. The label which set out with the intention to fill "a void in the country's dance music" has carried on this mission bringing out releases by artists like The Bug, DJ Scud and Rephlex old-timer Cylob. Rephlex has also attempted to bring to the fore lost classics, their recent re-issues of 808 State's classic Newbuild and the Humanoid Sessions 84-88 being prime examples. The label has also sought out artists from far and wide.

For Rephlex it's simple, according to Wilson-Claridge, "everyone was talking about Sheffield and Detroit and Chicago as places where interesting music was happening, we just thought it would be funny to do it with Cornwall". They have certainly achieved that. Now, with Wilson-Claridge holding the fort at the label's headquarters in north London and Aphex Twin living in south London, Rephlex may be a long way from Cornwall, but still the roots remain.

Some absolute gems in their back catalogue, even if you dont happen to like rdj

Which doesn't really answer the question at all... ;)

I know it's exciting to some, there have been a lot of hits on this thread from one or two other boards, I was just curious to know what all the fuss is about. DA's original post seems to be a cut and paste off some press release or other but I don't understand most of it.

It's people getting excited about new records being released sperge, obviously something you havn't done since you went to the premier of the 1812 oveture and claimed loud banging sounds in music would never catch on.

Rephlex has a huge underground following innit. Think of all the groundbreaking artists who started on Rephlex - Squarepusher, Luke Vibert, Mike Paradinas, Aleksi Perala, Global Goon, Bogdan Raczunski and plenty more... Obviously not to forget the two legends who got the label rolling (Aphex and Grant Wilson Claridge aka Universal Indicator, Mike Dred, Kosmik Kommando)

The majority of Rephlex's early releases by the above artists are hard to find, (some pretty much impossible) many of them groundbreaking and thus the label is seen as pretty prestigious. The music Rephlex has given us is always interesting, original and innovative, and sometimes ridulously happy and heart-warming. This with the fact that a lot of the releases are highly collectable ultimately creates a lot of interest in the label, therefore more people than usual are excited about the labels forthcoming releases. This is particularly true if you've followed the label through the years and seen how it's style has changed, always pushing the boundaries.

I remember when Rephlex pushed grime well before dubstep caught on in this country, and there's other examples where it's always seemed to be at the forefront of the next big dance music genre.

The label is totally 100% about the music, never selling out . Rephlex could be putting on huge parties but they choose not to, something which has always frustrated me to be honest. (They did lots in London a few years ago but they they moved back to Cornwall and do a small monthly night down there now). They could reissue their old rare releases which again they rarely do. This new years they're having a party down in Cornwall for only 200 people at a tenner each with DJ "Father Christmas" headlining - hmm who could that be I wonder? The way they act and the music they promote creates curiosity and ultimately this has resulted in a huge cult following. I for one always keep an eye out on the releases as I'm always interested in new signings and new releases from the artists I love.

I must sound like a right fanboy but it's one of my favourite labels run by the nicest people and I can totally relate to people who get excited about the forthcoming releases.

I for one totally heart Rephlex. It's true that there are a couple of dodgy rekkids in their catalogue, like this one, but there are a massive amount of incredible pieces in there too... influential and future-facing, like this one or dancefloor destroyers, like Mind War Electro off of this one. They also show their ability to find shining examples of different styles too, like Lory D or Bogdan or 808 State or Dynamix II, and introduce them to a new audience who may only know of Rephlex as being "Aphex Twin's label". Anyways. Come down to Plex on the 7th Nov and hear Rephlex smash up the place on a HUGE Funktion 1 rig...
