They're definitely not playing Glade - there was an exclusivity clause from Global. Besides, Orbital are very hot property at the moment and it costs a lot to book them. And I mean a lot. :?

Still, since Underworld are a UK festival exclusive at Glade, doesn't that make it all the more special? :)

Would be a very big surprise. Reading between the lines, Phil seems to have got the hump about something at Glasto when he did that DJ set with his bird last year.

that's a shame, particularly as Phil's dj sets were - while improving - pretty damned pony. To deny us an Other Stage set because of that is a bit galling!

I dunno - that set he did at last year's Bang Face Weekender was pretty damn good.

Can we have a quick roll call of who's seeing Orbital in Leeds on Thursday?

I'm going with a mate from Manchester and I believe Loopz is coming along too.

Can anyone recommend a good pub for pre-gig drinkies? The venue is Leeds Academy (wherever that is).

So annoying that I have to wait until September to see Orbital. These Leeds dates were announced later than the one I got tickets for! It's closer to where I live n'all! This is an outrage!

Shamelessly ripped from Loopz, the Orbital fans' website, here's a sneak preview of their 2009 set, taken at the Planet Festival in the Czech Republic a few days ago:

That's only the start of it, loads more clips taken from Selector on Monday with Satan, new version of Halcyon, Belfast, Know Where to run etc.

Proper new versions of stuff as well. I'm glad it's not the same old same old that they were doing in 2004. The new middle bit of Halcyon is well tasty:

Some comments about last night's Brighton gig from people on Loopz:

*********************************************
"instant reaction from me and my phone - too much chin stroking going on - the set was the good but the encore wasnt great in my opinion , people seemed to reserved , wicked sounds , average sort of lighting , if anything i thought the dome was too bright , i had a fantastic time but hoped for a better encore , the fullset was tight and included chime , satan, impact , are we here etc etc but was disappointed with doctor who, it was mixed and personally i think its too good to be mixed - all things considered it was still cool and the two orbital virgins loved it - one of which was my wife , she is 8 months pregnant and is due on the 3rd July , she loved it which to me is as good as my enjoyment (which was still considerable) , i have seen them going back to 1996 - tribal gathering and it was cool to see she loved it ......"
************************************************
"I second that...after all this wait...and meh! :? Visually ace, the first half incredible...second half......well it's early days...and plenty more shows!
BUT the bass was fookin incredible where I was stood...right in front of the bass speaker which would now explain the near complete deafness I have in my left ear!
Dont want to say too much though...will wait to see if and what others have to say...I did manage a proper weep between 2 certain songs...had to happen!
The Dome WAS bright wasnt it? But nothing else to fault it, lovely venue!" (this one was from my mate LusciousLucy, who is ORBITAL'S BIGGEST FAN EVAH!!!)
**************************************************
"I ended up at last night's gig (thanks Loopz!) and thought it was great. Far better than on the 'farewell tour' five years ago. The tune selection was far more representative of what I think is great about Orbital and some of the reworked versions were particularly good. Just generally more stripped-back, old-skool, deep Orbital - more melody, more acid house groove, less rampant honking and rattling and screeching. The way it should be, in my opinion. :)

I won't discuss set lists or anything but my highlight of the set was Chime. The lads finally did what I'd been wanting them to do with it for the last ten+ years. 8) And the encore was wicked too. Don't know how anyone can complain about that. Gutted they're not playing at Glastonbury - it would go down so well there.

It's a shame that a lot of my old Orbital-loving pals rejected the chance to buy tickets to any of the gigs this year as they were so put off by the last few tours. They would absolutely love this set. :("
*******************************************************

So, overall impressions seem to be playlist good, main set good, mixed opinions on the encore, poor lighting, crowd a bit chinstrokerish. Poor lighting can spoil crowd atmosphere, let's hope that's what it is.

Will be finding out for myself tonight.

Your bound to get a chin strokers crowd on a wednesday night - hardcore fans only. Weekend gigs are always better IMO, people get rat assed and let their hair down!

FUCK ME, THAT WAS MENTAL!

I've seen Orbital since 1996 and last night blew away everything I've seen before. They've gone back to their roots, stripped everything down, reworked it all and beefed up their sound. And it was all mixed from start to finish - none of that stop-start crap of 2004.

Leeds Academy (formerly the Town and Country) was a surprisingly small venue, but that made it more intimate and they really worked the crowd. No chinstrokers last night, ha!

I did manage to take a few shots, I've uploaded a couple of them to the gallery and will upload a few more later. I also took a short video clip during Lush, one of their slower tracks:

Sound is distorted because this little camera can't handle sound as loud as this (I was at the barrier). This clip doesn't really do the night much justice because it was a very intense, full-on banging set for the night. Even you Bang Face diehards would have loved it. :)

This is someone else's video of Halcyon. Again, the sound gets distorted because of the volume levels. The real sound was lovely and clear. :D
