nope but it wasnt the noise boys fault....i stood there for 3 days watching them being told to turn it down...... and a word of advise to festival goers, no matter how many times you stagger up to the desk and ask if we can turn it up....the answer will always be no!!!!

Jerome played very early on Friday i believe.

Gutted i didn't make it in the end, getting up there on Saturday (as Friday was a total no-no travel wise) seemed alot of effort, after reading how the only tent i was remotely bothered about sounded terrible only justified my decision in not going.

Please, if 2008 goes ahead give Overkill a fair shot at proceedings. Every year its been on now i have had issues with the sound and the size to a lesser extent. For me, it doesn't seem fair that practically every other tent gets a fair go at it and the one tent that sound is probably more integral to the rave getting brought gets a bum deal..yet again.

Anyone who went last year will tell you that Overkill was the liveliest of all the tents on-site so it amazes me that the Glade honchos hadn't clocked this and given the tent the deserved platform from which to operate effectively.

Absolutely gutted at missing Squarepusher's sets, reports sounded great.

Definitely - admittedly I wouldn't have realised were it not for the fact that the video screens were flashing up "Jerome Hill" throughout his set :)

@ Digital Atmosphere:

I received a tex from Mike (UI) on Saturday evening saying that he was drinking a Gran Reserva 2000 Rioja.

Don't reckon he made it, he would've been doing his nut about all his kit had he been, i know that much!

I don't think he played with the ragga twins as he was stuck on a train, so they just dj'd instead.

It was the only one of the major tents without a soundfield system - of course, the next question is why was that?! I do feel Overkill draws a hell of a lot of people to the fest, maybe not as much as Origin and Liquid, but certainly considerably more than the tent's actual capacity because it's the most musically diverse of the tents - the 860 that pack it out for one big act won't necessarily be the same as for another.

Oh yeah, and when it's clearly very obvious that it's not going to get turned up, please don't bother drowning out what little music we have by yelling "Turn it up"! That's a bit like pissing on your chips 'cos you've run out of vinegar.
I've got feelings of anxiety, me.

what I don't understand about the volume issue was that the Overkill was the lowest down in the valley with trees on one side to absorb/diffuse some of the sound. Plus the random level fluctuations between it and the other tents...

Re: Sound Levels

NeilC wrote:To all you who have comented on sound levels in the Overkill stage. I was one of the lighting technicians for this stage so was working alongside the noise boys throught the festival. We constantly had a member of the sound management team at the FOH tower monitoring our levels and were told that we had to stick to a strict limit. As many people know The Glade festival isn't exactly loved by many of the locals so the local council are looking for any reason why not to grant a license in future years, part of this is the audio db limits which HAD to be adheared to both in the tent and from perimiter readings.

Ps. To the DJ that walked off during his set and tried to incite a riot YOU ARE A IRESPONSIBLE PRICK. we were already understaffed with security in the tent and to do this was fucking idiotic. Also to threaten the MONITOR ENGINEER is not just dangerous but also stupid...he looks after montiors...not the FOH system....twat...

to all you other gladers...hope you enjoyed it!

Well thats cleared things up for me god damn council busybodys

I have some more response to the Overkill issues from the organisers:

Me: sound levels in the Overkill Tent (presumably because of all the difficulties in getting it up and running in the first place?).

Organisers: At one stage on Friday night after midnight it was a bit quiet for 2 hours due to the event noise team getting some high readings off site, but this didn't last long and they levels and the vibe in the tent was mostly excellent.

Me: Venetian Snares' walk-out, apparently because of a dispute with the monitors technician?

Organisers: Yeah, well, unfortunately we weren't too happy bout that either - neither congo natty that preceded him nor the 3 acts that followed him had a problem - its a shame he reacted the way he did - the overkill crew worked incredibly hard to put on the show and what was needed in this case was a bit of patience and understanding - what we got instead was a dj's ego and his childish behaviour - c'est la vie, as they say. Most of the feedback we got from Overkill has been fantastic
Top one. Nice one. Get sorted.

I went in to Overkill once to watch Luke Vibert and it was very quiet, personally I cannot hack a quiet sound system I find it extremely frustrating. Beardyman was awesome on Sunday and all sound issues seemed to be sorted by then. :)

Did they not hear reports of the crowd shouting turn it up quite a lot? Did they not realise it didn't have the soundfeild system as promised in all tents running after midnight?

"A bit quiet for 2 hours" hahahahahahaha They could at least admit that sound was too low and that one of the stacks had a fucked driver in it that popped and cliked for quite a while forceing the techs to cut a lot of the bass from one stack leaveing a thin and trebly sound totaly usutible for the style of music. Now if all this was caused by the massive river flowing through the tent on friday morning I don't mind, I'm impressed they got it open at all after peering in on friday morning but if they think everything was hunky dory soundwise in that tent they are very much mistaken as from the punters view it obviously wasn't, an honest response would be nice.

And as for V Snares, what a prick, hes got a lot of anger in him, probably why he makes music like he does, he had no excuse for spoiling things for us, his fans though. I don't condone getting music from fileshareing programs however if you're considering buying a V Snares album, go get it off bittorrent, in my opinion he no longer deserves the money, go buy something from KJ Sawka instead, he absoloutbly rocked the place.

Just a thought, but if it was an off-site reading that appeared to be coming from Overkill, could Herbal Highs have contributed in some small part to it? They had a pretty loud (especially for a stall) system and they were directly facing Overkill. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want to begrudge HH their system, especially as they were pumping out meaty dnb for anyone mad enough to brave the torrent on Friday before the tents started up, but maybe they weren't in the ideal place under the circumstances.

What it boils down to, though, is that OK would've been fine had it got a Funktion 1 rig.

Overkill was wicked all weekend, was disappointed about snares i have been looking forward to his set for ages, but i understand why he walked out, it WAS FAR TO QUIET! during endusers set i had to move as a couple were chatting about digital cameras right in front of me and it was louder than the music!!! and i was at the front!!!!!

Highlight had to be when Dolphin & Teknoist played Hardcore Body Harvest at the end of there set, and the noise people were making for one more tune made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up! Fuckin Wicked festival. cant wait for next year!

the scotch egg band was the best thing i saw all festival really good. fourtet also a highlight. pretty gutting about v snares. what i saw of enduser was awesome and dolphin and the tecknoist rinsed it, though i missed the last twenty minutes as i was too tired to stand let alone rave to gabba! otto von schirach was also wicked. the sound was shit most of the weekend tho.if it was flood damage then fair enough as it was better than nothing and they did do incredibly well to have the stage running at all. however, i would really like to know why every other stage, even the roots tent, had a surround sound ambisonic shizzle but the overkill got neglected in this respect. floods or not there was no surround sound noise cancelling madness at all in there which meant that from the outset we were just going to have a repeat of last years problems. pretty dissappointing realy after the glade team promised to sort this out.

yeah those inflatables were mental... my missus got smacked in the head by one of the dolphins and her hair was covered in mud! was pretty comical...

who was the dude crowd surfing in the dinghy on the friday? how the hell you got that in the air i don't know!

regarding sound levels....
i still had an awesome time, but the overkill tent needs to stop being neglected by the organisers before people stop coming for that kind of music... which would be a damn shame as it would restrict the diversity of the festival which for me is what makes it.

i'm not moaning, just REALLY want overkill to be spot on next year as it would be outta this world. :)

That'll be my mate Rhod, often seen at Bangface wearing the scream mask. I turned to my mates and was cracking up at the loon in the dinghy before seeing the mask and realising who it was. Was kind of hoping he'd fall flat on his face in the mud, that would have been piss funny. Sorry Rhod... :P

My post got deleted but I am not sure why.

I would love an answer to the following false statement on the glade festival website:

Funktion 1 is also, we feel, amongst the very highest quality rigs and it's also being used in Sancho Panza and in the Overkill tent. Having the highest quality gear, run by the best engineers, will mean highly accurate sound without as much noise spillage...

There was NOT a funktion one sound system at the overkill stage at Glade this year. Why? It is clear that the lack of it forced the sound to be reduced and overkill people love their noize. If it is because of the flooding then fine but I would love to here that from the organisers. I had an AMAZING time but it would have been faultless with higher volume in the evening at the Overkill stage
