People who left tents and rubbish behind at Glade

Postby MrB » 28 Jul 2007, 01:19

You should be ashamed of yourself. I thought the amount of rubbish left behind was totally unaceptable.

It offends me and is offensive to the land owner.

Why do it ? Last year the rubbish left was hardly a fraction of that left this year.

Maybe its just me being a middle aged, middle class raver, but if we can manage to leave no rubbish behind, surely other people can.

I honestly think it spoils the magical memory of the festival thinking of all that rubbish left behind.

Absolutely, I agree - however I did hear that the tents left somehow go to raising money for charity - i hope this is the case!

I have to agree, they were exceptional conditions and I'm ashamed to say I left stuff behind too.

But I note that TallSarah and her folks left nothing behind (apart from rubbish in bags). Maybe the old skool ar emore hardcore or something?

In 2004 and 2005, people did leave the site in a much cleaner state, I don't think folks were quite as conscientious last year, so perhaps it can't all be blamed on the weather. You'd have to be very determined to make two or more trips to the car in this year's conditions though.
Top one. Nice one. Get sorted.

If you have any useless mates who are still dithering about coming to Glade, show them this article: http://www.ravetalk.co.uk/glade-festival-2009.shtml

The camp next to us seemed to get abandoned on the Friday morning, because we never saw any of the people there after Thursday evening. They left all their tents and a fancy gazebo with a mosquito net on it. What a waste!

Oh well, at least we got to use the gazebo in their absence.

I don't recall the Glade organisers ever saying any such thing.

People were told that at Glastonbury - but it turned out that most abandoned tents were just dumped into landfill. Some charities did accept a handful, but people were asked to leave them at special donation points and most didn't bother in the circumstances.

When you think about it, it would have taken a lot of effort to recover those tents and then get them into a usable state - probably cheaper to buy new ones in bulk, to be honest.

well, i am sorry for leaving my tent then... but i took a party of 4, and we took all our rubbish with us, including the random black bags full of crap that seemed to accumilate outside our spot...lucky me, i hired a car for the occasion, you should have seen the state of it!!! took me 3hrs solid cleaning to get it to some sort of returnable state....

I'm ashamed to say that I also left my tent there as well.
It did me well all weekend, but by the monday it was beyond repair.

We tried to get some large plastic sacks from welfare/festival services on the monday morning to bag everything up to take with us or dump, but was told that they were in short supply and could only spare us 2 bags between the 4 of us.
We did tidy up our camp though and stuffed all our rubbish into the abandoned tent, so it would have been easy for the cleaners to remove.

I brought myself a roll of black bin liners, which came in very handy for both stashing rubbish and keeping all the really muddy stuff from the rest of my gear.

If there had been spots to dump rubbish I'd happlily have moved our (broken and ruined) tent there, along with any other rubbish.

Also there were plenty of 'scavenger' types going round taking stuff of any value so I'm sure only real rubbish was left after a little while.

There were loads of people who got free tickets in exchange for doing litter picking. Admittedly, it's not a job I'd relish but it's not exactly hard labour.

Regardless of where the tent gets dumped, it's going to go in landfill.

And most (but not all) of the tents I saw were pretty trashed anyway.
Let's go on an adventure!

I left my tent. Our campsite did try and keep all our rubbish in a few bin lines, but when the wind is blowing everything into about an inch of mud and you're scared to move from the gazeebo because there's a monsoon there is not a lot you can do.

I did feel really shit for leaving stuff, but knew of absolutely anywhere you could deposit stuff.

My tent was absolutely perfect, didn't leak, and I left it behind along with all pegs and bags. With hindsight I had enough energy to carry it but I couldn't face two trips and I didn't think I'd have such an easy walk back. I really hope that someone took it and it didn't end up in landfill, as it's been to all four Glades and survived the worst of the lot, probably thanks to a sticker that a nice Hari Krishna dude gave me in 2004. :(

I tidied up our camp on the Saturday when it was a bit drier, and I was glad cos by Sunday it was awash with sloppy watery mud again. I was a bit ashamed too as only one other person helped me clear up, but having said that, we were a lot tidier than last year as most people couldn't be bothered to cook anything and therefore made very little mess outside their own tents. Aside from a shitload of empty nos bulbs we only had three bags of rubbish between us!

There's no excuse for not keeping a tidy camp.

Considering the earthquake in Kashmir last year you'd've thought the Red Cross would be scouring for decent tents really, even considering the bulk costs - you can get volunteers to collect tents but you can't get them to make them at short notice.

i packed my tent up at 5am monday morning. All our rubbish was left in bin bags in a big pile as per previous years :)

There was an awful lot of stuff left in the mud / on the floor, you can blame people for leaving stuff behind, gathering stuff up in the rain/mud isnt too much fun, but if you bag it up as you go along like we did, its not too bad

I left my pop up tent....which the zips had bust on (thanks to Claire I think from camp GT for the Tape which helped keep me dry)

In hindsight I should have taken it back with me as it had a 2 year guarantee on it! Oh well....it was £55 and i got 2 festivals out of it!!! Not too bad I suppose!!!
