half cup of oats
1 cup of milk

microwave for 99 secs

stir

microwave for 66 secs

leave it alone for 5 mins

add syrup and eat!

I suppose you need to leave it for longer if you like it hard so maybe that's why you don't like it

Fill it with water and leave it untill you return from work, comes off pretty easy if you've never let it dry out.

Soak the oats overnight - the porridge turns out less lumpy.

Oh, and hob-top oats are the way to go.

our stainless steel pans get this treatment all the time. is it more damaging than cooking in them? with hot water? and maybe even salt? (like when boiling pasta). or making a reduced tomato sauce? i'm no chemist but i would have thought that hot and salt/acidity would be worse than cold water and oat goo all day.

and since you are the chemistry bod around here, can you explain why golden syrup tastes like the tin? this has been bugging me for years...

Tins/Cans aren't made from tin and haven't been for years. Nowadays they're almost always steel. Tin taints the flavour but is also poisonous, but it does last longer than steel in damp environments as it doesn't rust. If the can does contain tin, it'll be lined internally with plastic to protect the food.

Anyway, Leah's right, all metallic containers do taint the flavour which is why you should never store food wrapped in tin foil (which is made from aluminium, slightly less poisonous but a lot cheaper than tin). Also why the Chinese use wooden cutlery/utensils.

Next time your syrup can is almost empty, use a spoon to scrape it out and lick the spoon, you'll soon see what she means. It's foul.

Most containers seem to have some influence on the flavour. Beer drunk out of a plastic container tastes very different to beer drunk out of a glass, for example.

In the case of Lyle's Golden Syrup, I've only ever known it from a tin and haven't had it anyway since I was a child, so I wasn't sure if they sold it in other containers these days. So I haven't really had a basis for comparison, which is why I was curious about why Leah felt the container influenced the flavour.

Regarding the use of tin in cans: close, but no cigar. Food cans are mostly steel these days but they are still plated with tin. This layer of tin is much thinner these days however:

There has been a growing use of aluminium cans, of course, but in my experience these are usually drinks cans.

Golden syrup comes in those rectangular plastic bottles with a handle on top. 5 litres I think but I might be wrong. It's a very silly amount of golden syrup anyway.

Edit: I dunno if it tastes any differnt... I stay away from it, I'm slightly scared that I'll eat a bit and not stop
