What are your favourite club nights in your city?

Postby Sperge » 12 Aug 2008, 17:46

Let's have a round-up of what's good to go to in your local city.

Cabbage at the West India Centre in Leeds is an OK psy-trance night. Pure Techno in Hull isn't bad, if a bit chin-strokerish. I used to love Northern Light in Leeds but that's long gone.

Must admit I tend to go out more in London and Manchester when I go out to clubs, what about the rest of you?

i know its the obvious answer but bangface all the way. its pretty much the only club night i ever bother going to, londons surprisingly dry.
although saying that i'll probably end up at fabric on friday (seeing as i didn't get a boat ticket  ), the line ups pretty awesome

Esko in leicester seems to be pretty much the only place that puts on good nights. Filtered is the dnb one that concentrates on the liquidey side of things, the hip/trip-hop one is also a gud un.

Ektos in swindon is a good (if slightly stuffy in atmosphere) old skool night. Diverse is a good dnb night and the happy hardcore nights can be a laugh as well.

In terms of line-ups anyway bangface isn't the only good thing in London. Braindrop always looks good (and the sets found on http://www.braindamageradio.com sound sick as well) the same people are behind yardcore in corsica studios (which seem to be putting on more and more good nights) Some of the hardcore breaks nights are menna be good as well.

Erm... well I don't go to alot of non-techno nights anymore (and when I did they were generally at Fabric / The End), so these are all a bit samey...

Sud Electronic (small venues, quality minimal (NOT MNML) djs. Qualty label showcases from time to time, wicked little crowd)

Closer (detroit techno night in various warehouse-type spaces - strong lineups - last one I went to had Rolando and Fabrice Lig - nice)

Brand New Fiction (more eclectic, gets a variety of headliners from Dan Bell to Alex Smoke)

Split (Ben Sims' night, can't really go wrong. Seen Rob Hood rip the arse out of a couple parties)

Have you been to Digital City there at all? There was a girl called Dani (username was sparklyfairytype) who went there quite a lot.

Well, OK then, nearest decent city (which I guess is Edinburgh in your case).

oh, well in Edinburgh it would be the Bass Syndicate nights. I'm not sure if they're doing them anymore now, but possibly one of the best nights I've ever been to was a night in the Liquid Rooms with Plump DJ's. Went with Chopper. The warm up DJ's were sick. The volume was so LOUD you could feel the bass vibrate through your whole body. And the Plumps played the best set I've heard them play ever. Plus the liquid rooms are very nice. Feeling the bass through the balcony area was awesome. And if i'm remembering the night well they had a nice little beer garden to go and smoke in. They don't really do nights regularly though :(

They've also had Tayo & Aquaksy on that I can remember in a different club called the Bongo club which is pretty cool.

I should highlight though that this is one night out of 4 breaks options in Scotland.

i agree with laurennoodles about london but that's because i have a strong preference for the grubbier venues (electrowerkz, jack's)

braindrop is definitely on my to do list.

corsica studios is alright tho'- been to a couple of i love acid nights there that were pretty decent.

Corsica is prob the best venue in London at the moment, best combo of crowd, sound system and (god I hate this word...): VIBE - anyone been to Hidden near Waterloo?? Need to check that out.

Not been to any of the electowerkz venues for ages - some of the rooms have cages for dancers in them if I remember rightly - that was good fun, clambering in, and, well, ahem.

The Centrifuge guys are putting on some cracking nights at Moog bar (check out the acid BBQ this Sunday), and then there's Lobotomy at Blueprint for the hard stuff (and Rigor Mortis for the really, really hard stuff but I haven't made it to one of their events yet).
I've got feelings of anxiety, me.

Norwich is pretty wank as far as clubs/bars go for events to be held at. The queen charlotte was fun but they've stopped doing events now thdown Other then that we have Mustard lounge which hosts some good events.
But as for good music nights on we have the Amen-tal guys obviously who put on great nights & roots renegade. We also have Sin technologies on the first fri of every month @ hades bar which is open 'til 3am playing lots of breakcore, gabber & horrible, horrible noise

Fresh Out The Box
(breaks)

Hit and Run
(DnB)

Club Dub
(dubstep)

Baraka
(Psy/anything goes)

and very very occasionally Simple/Slide/Ecletric. (house/techno) Couple of the promoters are so far up their arse and are twats. so are some of the parts of the crowd. get goos DJs tho.

are the only nights worth going going out in oxford. the rest is full of pretentious tossers or rnb hiphop chart cheese loving cunts who like to bottle each other and vomit/piss/passout on the streets any time between the hours 11pm-3am.

Belfast:

Diston have now stppoed doing nites but they will be replaced by less frequent Acroplane events (based around the net-label) the first of whichwill feature Ebola and Herv amongst others. Jasey Diston will be continuing to do nights under a new guise, the fist of which wil be Mala

There is a nite called GRUB that pops up now and again too, its done by Boxcutter and Nez, very good.

Shine/Stiff Kitten do good nites for the housier/techno end of things, the crowd can be a bit susspect though, the last one was Surgeon and Robert Hood, next one is Bens Sims, Steve Rachmad, Benga, Skream, Boxcutter and the Twitch guys. Laurent Garnier will do the one ofter that

Fuckloads. There's no shortage of great nights in Manchester.

SpinCycle (tearout, with occasional smatterings of dubstep) everything about this
Carry On - was Tangled Breaks (mainstream breaks, plodstep, tech funk) the crowd
Sequence (techno, glitch, dubstep, etc.) their balls
Missing/Sinergy (hard house/hard techno/hard on) the professional dancers
Metropolis (DnB) the lineups and the crowd ain't too scally

There's also loads of random monthly nights that you won't fail to enjoy as long as you stay away from Sankeys or The Warehouse Projects as a general rule, the crowd they attract tends to leave the premises at 2am which can be a godsend after being rammed in like sheep for the last 3 hours but IMHO it shouldn't be like that to begin with. Their guests (especially TWHP) are often the most high-profile available at the time and the punters reflect that.

I have to say there's very little, if any breakcore or other similar maximum rinsing that I've found. There's the occasional one-off that Sequence do, e.g. Venetian Snares this year, but Manc doesn't really have much of a focus on it. When I start DJing I might organise something but I could almost guarantee that it would be dead.
